Understanding Medicare Basics
Learn about the components of Medicare and how they coordinate to provide healthcare coverage.

Components of Original Medicare
Medicare is divided into "parts" that cover different types of medical services:
Medicare Part A
Covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, home health care, and hospice care. Most beneficiaries qualify for premium-free Part A coverage if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.
Medicare Part B
Covers medically necessary services from healthcare providers, including doctor visits and preventive services designed to detect or prevent illness when treatment is most effective.
Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover 100% of your medical expenses.
Original Medicare may result in significant out-of-pocket costs. Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, or Prescription Drug Plans may help reduce these expenses.
